History - Mount Laurel Township was incorporated just 114 years ago, with the signing of an act of the NJ legislature officially recognizing the town's secession from Evesham. But in that relatively short time, the town has succeeded in establishing an identity of its own.
Mount Laurel grew around the town of Centerton, located on the left bank of the Rancocas Creek. Centerton, near where exit 43 from Interstate 295 now lies. Mount Laurel was named by the school teacher Hannah Gillingham for the Laurel found in the hills. Previously it was known as Mount Pray, Evans Mound and Evesham Mount. Mount laurel was accepted in the mid1800's when the local post office assumed the name, Mount Laurel.
In time, more hamlets sprang up in Mount Laurel.
Masonville was the site of an iron foundry, a tiny schoolhouse, the Methodist Episcopal Church and a post office; Centerton had the Rancocas Chemical Works, established in 1870, a lumberyard and a tavern; Hartford featured a telegraph office and a schoolhouse; and Colemantown was the site of little more than a dozen homes.

Notable in Mount laurels colorful history is the story of General Henry Clinton, the British commander of forces in America, who, days before taking the Third, Fourth and Fifth Brigades to fight the Battle of Monmouth, made his base in a two-story farmhouse that still lies on Mount Laurel-Evesboro Road. Half of of Clintons force stayed with the General in Mount Laurel, the other half camping in nearby Moorestown.
During Clinton's stay, June 18-20, 1778, many local families saw their homes plundered by the Hessians, British mercenary soldiers. Yet many more of Clinton's troops, aware of the pursuit of George Washington and perhaps anticipating British defeat at Monmouth, chose that week to desert. Some of their descendants remain to this day in Mount laurel and it's neighboring towns.
